The road just disappears! We are seriously limited as to the amount of off-roading we can do but we will eventually rent a 4x4 for a day or two and take advantage (Its days like this that Barry kicks himself for not opting for the 4x4 initially). In the meantime our "UAE off-road" book is great for other sightseeing ideas.
