Jinn

My friends and I were driving back to Dubai after spending the day on the beach in the mountainous region of Fujairah - the conversation turned to that of Jinn. It was explained to me that Jinn are invisible creatures that possess superhuman powers and even the ability to possess human beings – similar to the western idea of ghosts/spirits. They are generally experienced around mountains and although one girl in particular was uncomfortable talking about it, I got to hear a few stories. This week I was surprised to find that the front page of 7Days displayed the picture above with an article named “Firestarter”. I would attach the link to the story but its currently unavailable - apparently random strange fires were starting up in someone's home (yes, in a mountainous region). It is beleived a Jinn caused the fires.

Jumana

Jumana a show consisting of stunning audio-visual, pyrotechnics, water and laser effects. The home of Jumana is the Al Sahra Desert Resort a unique eco-tourism resort, situated just thirty minutes from the heart of Dubai. Al Sahra is a beautiful place to get away from the construction sounds of Dubai. I was wondering if the nature sounds I was hearing were recorded or real. We chose to have dinner before the show at one of the two restaurants. Do we have to go to the Shisha pit to order Shisha? Going once, going twice - Sold!

Welcome to the UAE– the most materialistic place on earth! Its all about prestige in this country, for example, the number on your license plate indicates how rich you are. I thought it was crazy when I read an article late last year about a license plate selling for over 6 million dirhams (CAD2,000,000) and then TODAY an article came out stating that the number 5 was sold for 25.2 million (CAD 7,875,000). The article: http://www.emiratestodayonline.com/ArticleText.aspx?article=13_05_2007_001_008

Tip: If you get cut off by someone with any of the numbers 1 to 1500 on their license plate – don’t employ road rage.

We've now been in Dubai 1 year

Before leaving for Canada (the trip that marked our first year in Dubai) we happened upon this area in old Dubai. The weather was warm and the breeze was beautiful - perfect walking around town weather. Searching these photogenic little alleyways proved very interesting. How have we not seen it before!? There is so much hiding around the corner in Dubai. Link to photos: http://www2.snapfish.co.uk/share/p=777121178973072000/l=266273333/g=32873750/cobrandOid=1007/otsc=SYE/otsi=SALB

Back in Dubai!

We have arrived back in Dubai! This trip marked our first year in Dubai and I have to admit that there was a real mix of feelings upon arrival at the Dubai airport. Among the usual post-trip duties (grocery shopping and unpacking), to ease back into the Dubai rhythm we had breakfast al fresco at the Marina and relaxed by the pool. Due to the speed of construction, we noted many changes to the place we now call home. Intersections have drastically changed, there are many changes to the Dubai Metro and numerous buildings have been considerably altered, namely the Burj Dubai which is noticeably taller!
