World's first revolving tower to be built in Dubai

The world's first revolving, pre-fabricated tower is to be built in Dubai by Italian architect Dr. David Fisher with a development value of around $3 billion (Dh11 billion).

The 80-storey Dynamic tower will be 420 metres tall and located on Shaikh Zayed Road.

"The tools used today in real estate are so primitive. From 1889, steel was used to construct the Eiffel tower and then reinforced concrete was used in 1905. We are still building similar to how the Egyptians built the Pyramids," Fisher told Gulf News before the launch in New York.

The area of the Dynamic Tower in Dubai will be around 1.2 million square feet.

Fisher said there would be a central core in the tower for lifts. There will even be lifts especially for cars, so it will be possible to drive to apartments.

The Dynamic Tower offers infinite design possibilities, as each floor rotates independently to create a building that constantly changes shape, resulting in a unique and ever evolving architectural structure.

In between each rotating floor, there will be horizontal wind turbines so that the entire tower will be completely self-generating energy enough to power five other towers of similar size.

"It will only take six days to complete one floor," said Fisher. In contrast, the average time taken to complete a floor of a traditional building is around six weeks. Fisher estimated that it will only take aorund 20 months to complete the Dubai Dynamic Tower.

Average sizes of apartments range from 1,330 square feet to penthouses which will be around 12,900 square feet.

Fisher said prices will start at aorund $3,000 (Dh11,000) per square foot.

The second Dynamic Tower will be built in Moscow, with completion scheduled for 2010. Fisher said the third Dynamic Tower will probably be in New York.

Sights - Ascension day

I love the second picture which is the Middle East version of a scarecrow. No plaid and overalls here, it's a stick wearing National Dress (the Kandura and Guthra). The first picture was taken at a dam. It's hard to tell how large the mountains, and island, are.

Lunch - Ascension day

We stopped for lunch at a small town "cafeteria". These shops always have a great selection of fresh juices - it helps the fried food go down much nicer. A large carrot juice for AED10 and a large mango juice for the same price. A zinker combo for AED8 and a butterfly prawns combo for AED10. Cheap eats!

Ascension Day long weekend

We tried route #16 in our off-roading book and discovered that the border fence between the UAE and Oman, which was planned at the time of publishing, had been built which kept us from completing the journey. Not entirely disappointed, we saw farms with camels and drove in the sand. We drove past what looked like a helipad and thought it was a good place to take some snaps of the truck.

Construction in the summer

The sun in Dubai is HOT. The UAE Ministry of Labour announced a summer midday work ban, warning companies that flout the law would face heavy fines. The ministry said the ban would be from 12:30 pm to 3:00 pm from July 1 until Aug. 31. The ban on labourers working during the day’s hottest hours was introduced in 2004, but its start date has varied. The ministry also said that an intensive inspection campaign would be start on the first day of the ban coming into force. The ministry said companies must also provide covered rest areas for the workers during the breaks.

Salik

In Arabic, Salik means a person who enganged in Islamic spiritual path. Salik is a road toll which was introduced in July of 2007. It currently costs me AED8 to travel to work and back. In September it will cost me AED16! I moved to Dubai because it was tax free - I consider this toll a tax! Humph - well at least there is no snow; but with global warming that could be around the corner. Speaking of around the corner, there is talk about introducing VAT!

More Dubai Metro

The first phase of Dubai's Metro System will be completed by end of 2009. Everyday, 1.2 million passengers are expected to travel to 55 stations in air-conditioned carriages.

There will be two transfer stations — Union Square and the BurJuman Centre. At the transfer stations, Green and Red Lines will cross each other and passengers will be able to change between lines. Seeing Bon Jovi In Style

Bon Jovi played Abu Dhabi at the Palace and thanks to Neil we all went to the event in class. VIP tickets to Bon Jovi! VIP in Abu Dhabi is very nice! No overcrowding, overpouring of the G in the G&T, clean flush toilets and we didn't have to get mixed up in the parking dabacle after the concert. First class all the way!

Heading home

Waking up refreshed, we made ourselves some breakfast and washed it down with coffee. The last sight to see was a waterfall. We drove and drove, walked and climbed and we couldn’t find the waterfall, although we could hear it. In conclusion, Nicky and Neil claimed not to be the camping type but handled the good and the bad incredibly well. I would even go so far as to say that Nicky has natural camping instinct :-) There was no complaining during this trip by either party and we give Nicky and Neil top marks especially since there was a point I would have packed up to protect myself from the walls of sand.

The first night has been categorised as the worst camping experience of my life BUT the next night definitely made my top 5.

Wadi Camping - Second Night

We drove through some small towns, some wadies and armed with our GPS, we located a very nice spot to set up for the night. This time around Nicky and Neil were getting faster at setting up their tent. I searched around the area for some "firemaker bush" to get our fire started, Nicky prepared the tent for the night, Barry got the food ready for dinner and Neil climbed a hill to get it all on video. Our fire was perfect, the sky was clear, the stars were bright and the breeze was sand free. Now THIS is camping. We marked this spot on the GPS so we could visit it again and named it after Nicky and Neil.
